From Heather:

The Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing is a series of conferences designed to bring the research and career interests of women in computing to the forefront. Presenters are leaders in their respective fields, representing industrial, academic and government communities. Leading researchers present their current work, while special sessions focus on the role of women in today's technology fields, including computer science, information technology, research and engineering.

Past Grace Hopper Celebrations have resulted in collaborative proposals, networking, mentoring, and increased visibility for the contributions of women in computing.

In the past we have had several students attend this conference (Beibei Yang, Mary Beth Smrtic, and Kate Tsui).

If you are interested in attending, there is still time to apply for a student scholarship

Here is the link to the scholarship Application:

Apply for a scholarship - it's easy!

Another way to cover the cost of attending would be to apply to be a Hopper (a volunteer). Applications for this will open up in July of 2010. Hopper Info

An update on the CS Olympics

Hello CSGSO members,

Here's an update on the CS Olympics tomorrow 4/23 in the CS library (OS219A).

We have 17 students registered so far: 16 students in Computer Science, and 1 in Economics.

I've printed out the CSGSO banner. Snacks, drinks, plates, cups, and napkins are all set. Extra batteries are all set too. Name tags will be provided by W.B. Mason tomorrow.

We've placed an order of 10 pizzas from Romano's Pizza of Dracut. They will be delivered tomorrow at 2:30pm.

We'll set up at noon tomorrow in the CS library. We need to rearrange the chairs, hang the banner, and hook up Wii to the projector.

The event will be from 2:30pm to around 5:30pm:

We'll accept on-site registration from 2 to 3pm. We'll ask each attendee to sign the name twice: one on the GSA form for reimbursement, and the other on a card for the raffle. The attendees might be different from the registration form, as more people might show up. The attendees will have the chance to practice from 2 to 3pm. Meanwhile Food and drink will be provided.

The seeding round will be held from 3 to 4pm. The single elimination tournament will be held from 4pm to 5:30pm.

Prior to the tournament, we need 2-3 staff to set up between noon and 2:30pm. At the tournament, we'll need 2-3 staff in charge of the attendance sheet, registration, and raffle, and 1-2 staff organizing the tournament.

If you'd like to help us out (instead of playing the tournament), please confirm by replying this email with your available time slot.

Thanks a lot!

Subject: Opportunities for ACM Members at Epic!
To:

My name is Stephanie and I'm a recruiter with Epic, a healthcare software company based in Madison, Wisconsin.  (If you haven't heard of Epic, don't be surprised—Forbes recently referred to us as the "Silent Giant" of the electronic medical records industry.)

Epic is looking for a way to reach out to ACM members with backgrounds in Computer Science and Engineering. We have numerous technical positions available, including software development (visa sponsorship available), server systems and technical consulting.

Could you pass this message along to members, or let me know if it would be possible to post positions on your website? I have  attached  samples of what our job postings may look like.

Members are welcome to email me their resume directly to job@epic.com, or check us out at http://careers.epic.com/.

We would also be interested in sending a technical team member to present to your group about the interesting challenging we face working in the healthcare IT industry.

Thank you,

CSGSO Botball snack stand turns a profit of $643.85

Hello All,

Our CSGSO hosted a snack stand at the Botball last Saturday (4/10). We spent a total of $1362.65, including 1 purchase from Suppas, 3 from Costco, 1 from Walmart, and 3 from Market Basket:

Water and soda: $141.69
Chips: $28.47
Candy: $134.35
Pizza: $660
Hot dog: $57.89
Coffee, cups, milk, sugar, and gallon water: $64.91
Plates, ice, Wet Ones, and napkins: $48.87
Petty cash: $260
Return: -33.53
--------------------------
Total: $1362.65

Some notes for whoever runs this event the next year:
  1. Among all the soda we were selling, ice tea was not as popular as the others.
  2. Dr. pepper and diet coke ran out fast.
  3. We got too much candy. There were half left that we had to put them on sale.
  4. A few people complained on the quality of the pizza. We should consider ordering from somewhere else other than Suppas.
  5. People loved our hot dogs! I heard lots of nice comments. 128 hot dogs were sold out before 2pm!
  6. Coffee was popular too. We finished a 40oz bag of Dunkin Donuts ground coffee.
  7. Advertisement is important. I believe coffee was more popular this year than the last year because I put a Dunkin Donuts logo on the menu next to "coffee". Also, hot dogs was popular only after Andy made a sample and placed it on a plate next to the menu.
After running the stand, we have $1647.75 in cash, including $230 from Holly. Phyllis owes us $108.75 for the iCode Botfest kids. Therefore we made a profit of $643.85. Congratulations CSGSO!! Thank you, Andy, Yinjie, Karen, Xu, Zheng, Heather, Alex, Kate, Bindu, and all the Botball volunteers that helped us! Thank you Holly for giving us this opportunity!

This profit will be deposited to our CSGSO account (former WiCS account), and taken care by the university Student Affairs. This account will be used for our CSGSO's future events.

Thank you,

Beibei (Betty) Yang

Google Summer of Code 2010 is going to accept student applications on March 29

Google Summer of Code (GSoC) is a program that offers student developers stipends to write code for various open source projects such as Eclipse, Ubuntu, and Python.  Historically, the program has brought together over 3,400 students with over 200 open source projects, to create millions of lines of code. The program, which kicked off in 2005, is now in its sixth year. A list of accepted organizations of this year is available at: http://socghop.appspot.com/gsoc/program/accepted_orgs/google/gsoc2010. They are going to accept student applications from March 29 to April 9, 2010.

A note from Google Summer of Code:

Want to write open source code?
Want to make money?
Want to do both?

Historically, Google Summer of Code™ has brought together nearly 3,400 students with over 200 open source projects to create millions of lines of code. We're looking for mentors and students to join us in making 2010 the best Summer of Code yet! We'll be offering successful student contributors a 5,000 USD stipend, enabling them to focus on their coding projects for three months.

The Google Summer of Code program is designed to encourage student participation in open source development. Kicking off in 2005, the program has several goals:

• Inspire young developers to begin participating in open source development
• Provide students in Computer Science and related fields the opportunity to do work related to their academic pursuits during the summer
• Give students more exposure to real-world software development scenarios (e.g., distributed development, software licensing questions, mailing-list etiquette, etc.)
• Get more open source code created and released for the benefit of all
• Help open source projects identify and bring in new developers and committers

Google will accept applications from open source projects from March 8–12, 2010. Student applications will be accepted from March 29–April 9, 2010.

Call for Participation: 2010 Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing

Hello All,

The Grace Hopper (GHC) 2010 Call for Participation is now open at http://gracehopper.org/2010/participate/call-for-participation/

Key Deadlines:
• The deadline to submit proposals is March 16, 2010.
• Notifications on the submission status will be sent out by May 18, 2010.

Recommendations to anyone who wants to participate:
1.Your subject should not be something specific to your organization.
2.If you have a panel – it needs to span across organizations – not 5 people from the same company discussing an issue in their company. Combining academics and industry or interdisciplinary discussions are great.
3.We are encouraging submissions that promote diversity and International participation.
4.A submission in line with the theme of the conference "Collaborating Across Boundaries" would be ideal.

Submissions are being accepted in the following categories:
• Birds of a Feather (BOFs)
• New Investigators Technical Papers
• Panels, Workshops and Presentations
• PhD Forum
• Technical Posters
• Technical Research Papers

You are invited to use the GHC group to discuss ideas for sessions, find collaborators and panelists, and exchange questions and answers about the submission process.

I had the chance to attend the GHC this year as a scholarship recipient. It's a huge opportunity for female in Computer Science from both academia and industry. I encourage you to apply.
